Clivate Hub and Galmudug Ministry of Fisheries Lead Joint Environmental Mission to Hobyo
Hobyo, Galmudug State, Somalia – May 2025
Clivate Hub, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Galmudug State, recently conducted a joint study and environmental action mission to the historic coastal city of Hobyo. Led by our Galmudug Area Manager, the mission aimed to assess environmental challenges and promote sustainable community-led solutions.
Hobyo is a city with rich cultural heritage and strategic ecological importance along Somalia’s central coastline. However, it currently faces pressing environmental issues, particularly plastic waste pollution along the beach and the encroachment of sand dunes, which have partially buried homes and disrupted daily life.

During the mission, Clivate Hub and the Ministry team engaged with local fishermen and community members, raising awareness about the harmful effects of pollution on marine life and coastal ecosystems. The highlight of the visit was a collaborative beach clean-up effort, where youth and fishermen—despite lacking gloves or waste collection tools—demonstrated their commitment to protecting the environment.
Clivate Hub commends the resilience and dedication of Hobyo’s coastal communities. We continue to advocate for increased investment in sanitation infrastructure, including the provision of gloves, trash pickers, bins, and waste collection vehicles, to support ongoing clean-up efforts.
This mission marks another step in Clivate Hub’s broader commitment to climate action, environmental protection, and sustainable blue economy initiatives across Somalia.
